The Rumour: Ever since The Hobbit star Martin Freeman was announced to have joined Civil War, rumours have abounded that he would be playing a reincarnated version of Red Skull.

Even when it was revealed that he was is in fact playing Black Panther's pal Everett Ross, fans refused to believe that an actor of Freeman's caliber and profile would end up playing a mere diplomat in the MCU, and the Red Skull theory continued to pick up significant traction online.

How Likely Is It?: Not very. The movie already has enough villains and enough on its plate, plus it's hard to imagine Freeman in such an out-there role. Also, Civil War's creator, Mark Millar, has himself said "Once you get to see [his role], it’s so obvious. All I’ll say is, he’s not the Red Skull."

Of course, this wouldn't be the first time someone linked to a movie set has misdirected audiences, but considering that reviews mostly talk about Freeman's role being surprisingly small, there doesn't seem to be much credence to this one. This seems like wishful fanboy thinking more than anything. 2/10
