1. That Lightsabre Isn't Very Practical - Star Wars VII
Never before have 88 seconds mattered to so many people or got so many tongues wagging, just as JJ Abrams intended. As well as a swelling hero shot for the Millennium Falcon and a new unlikely hero in the shape of the ball droid, the teaser trailer that barely even qualified as a teaser trailer was most notable for the revelation of a new villain and a new weapon. But rather than being sold on the long-sword light-sabre the same way they were to the double-ended version unveiled by Darth Maul, Star Wars fans uncharacteristically sneered at the new set-up. Fans shouted that the design was flawed, impractical and would probably lead to accidental self-violence, as if the logistics of weaponry were suddenly the most important thing in a sci-fi fantasy movie. And while they had something of a point, the complaints seemed like nothing more than opportunistic cynicism: complaint for complaint's sake. And frankly, those criticisms missed what could be some smart reasoning behind the design: remember Luke's chopped off hand? That wouldn't have happened if he had some sort of protection built into his weapon, like a cross guard from a long-sword for instance... While that will inevitably inspire suggestions that the wielder is in fact Luke himself, gone full Sith, it could just be someone close to the now aged Skywalker whose learnt the lessons of his lost hand and developed a new sabre as a direct response. Either way, dismissing the design from a teaser trailer was clearly a mistake. Which other complaints about upcoming movies do you think need to die? Share your thoughts below in the comments thread.
