10 Most Ridiculous Rom-Com Premises In Cinema History
8. What Happens In Vegas Justice System Forces Couple To Live Together, Probably Illegal
What Happens In Vegas might not be supernatural in origin (like many of the films to come on this list), but it relies on an enormous amount of contrivance to get going. Joy (Cameron Diaz) and Jack (Ashton Kutcher) are both drowning their sorrows in Law Vegas and end up hanging out after a room mix-up. They get drunk and get married, yet before they can get a quickie divorce, Jack uses a coin given to him by Joy on a slot machine and wins $3 million. Jack is jubilant until he realises that Joy is entitled to half the winnings, and the two go to court back home to get a divorce where a judge says that he will only unlock the money if the two try to co-exist as a couple for 6 months. Until that point, the money will be essentially held hostage by the courts. Joy and Jack happened to come across the biggest asshat of a judge walking in the entire United States, the one who couldn't go with the conventional 50/50 settlement, but instead decided to have a little fun with the two first. It's ridiculous because it would never happen in real life, even with the relatively animated nature of American judges. You'd appeal that ruling, and probably be cruising around in a Ferrari before lunchtime. And of course, this is without even mentioning that the two end up staying together at the end and getting "properly" married.
