1. The Lone Ranger
Budget: $225 million
What We Got: The Johnny Depp Show aka It Worked For Pirates So It Must Work For Westerns. The Lone Ranger was originally stalled by Disney over concerns of the movie's ballooning budget, and so, after Depp, Armie Hammer, director Gore Verbinski and producer Jerry Bruckheimer each surrendered 20% of their payday, the movie was finally given the go-ahead, as this somehow assured the studio that their investment was more solid. It wasn't. The Lone Ranger boasted a few nice visual moments, but is way too reliant on CGI, and despite running for 149 minutes, was really about very little; it is a bloated, boring mess. Johnny Depp spends most of the film mugging, but simply painting the guy's face does not mean the movie he's starring in is going to make money, and there's absolutely nothing on screen that seems to explain the horrendously over-inflated budget. Justice prevailed, though, and the film is a veritable box office bomb, one sure to be talked about for decades. Which movies do you feel most egregiously wasted their budgets?
