Pointless Because: The Mandarin Twist, 'nuff said really. Whether you like Shane Black's 11th hour sleight of hand or not in last summer's Iron Man 3, Ben Kingsley's Trevor Slattery character is an utterly superfluous component of the MCU, his use only being so Shane Black and Marvel can feel smug about getting one over on audiences who actually expected Kingsley to be the film's Big Bad (that honour instead went to Guy Pearce's Aldrich Killian). Kingsley's brilliant performance did garner many of the film's biggest laughs, but as a character he is still completely needless and one of comic book cinema's most brazen recent divergences from the source material. How To Fix It: Go back in time and stop Shane Black from ever putting this conceit to film? Or just forget that it ever happened, given that we're likely never going to see Mr. Slattery again (oh, what a sight that would be).
