10 Ridiculously Underrated Movie Remakes Everyone Must Watch

4. King Kong (2005)

The Italian Job 2003
Universal

The first film to come from a post-Lord of the Rings Peter Jackson, 2005's CGI-heavy King Kong update was always going to suffer in comparison.

Mind you, compared to the likes of The Lovely Bones or The Hobbit Trilogy, this thing is a bloody masterpiece.

But even taken on its own terms, the remake may have some pacing issues (the Skull Island sequence could be its own film, it lasts so long. Wonder has anyone considered that), but it's largely a triumph.

By turns scary, thrilling, tragic, and appropriately melodramatic, the film effectively evinces the scale and over-the-top style of the adventure serials it apes (sorry) without ever losing track of its eponymous star's heartbreaking humanity.

Well, not humanity, but you get the picture.
