10 Rip-Off Movies (That Messed Up What They Copied)

1. Repo Men Stripped All Of Repo! The Genetic Opera's Charm

One of a string of flops responsible for dimming Jude Law’s once bright star (remember when he was tipped to be the next Bond?), 2010’s Repo Men was a grim sci fi which combined a convoluted plot with indecisive attempts at satire to create a muddled, uneven mess of a film.

Noteworthy mainly for its contribution to the then-nascent R-rated action movie trend, the movie’s plot centred around a pair of repo men hired by a shady organ-transplant provider known as The Union to, er, “repossess” the organs of patients who default on payments.

It’s an intriguing premise which could have made for an exciting film - and it had, actually, two years earlier.

Repo! The Genetic Opera centres its story on an unscrupulous organ repossession agent who has a change of heart (get it? Sorry) and begins to question the motivations and machinations behind his shady employer GeneCo. If the two films sound similar, it’s important to note that as the title implies, Repo! is a musical told entirely in song.

A goth rock extravaganza, the movie shamelessly leans in to the bizarre and campy nature of its premise, a trick which the dour, clinical, and self-serious Repo Men well and truly missed.
