6. Groundhog Day
From its surface, Groundhog Day is not an overtly romantic film. However, from Bill Murrays character being stuck on a day like one vicious loop comes the finding of love. The existential questions withstanding about what the film is actually trying to say about being stuck in that day and exactly how long that occurred, the films ultimate theme is about changing oneself for the better. Through reliving this day over and over again, Bill Murrays Phil Conners grows from a cynical man to a man who learns to love Rita, played by Andie MacDowell. In finding that love, Phil wants to learn to become a better man. This could have easily been an unbelievable transformation in a more lackluster screenplay, but, with the help of Bill Murrays persona and performance, we do not see a new Phil but a better Phil. What the film says about love is that sometimes its worth becoming better for someone you love. And in the realm of a repeating day, Ramis creates a film that is dark, funny and without a doubt, romantic.
