10 Sacred Films That Should Never Be Remade

4. The Shining

Pairings in cinema don€™t get better than Stanley Kubrick and Jack Nicholson. Working together on the adaptation of Stephen King€™s novel The Shining, this duo€™s collaboration created one of the best horror movies of all time. For a lot of people, it is the best. Horror being horror, a sort-of remake of The Shining already exists. A 1997 TV mini-series sought to top Kubrick€™s visual tale of the Overlook Hotel by re-adapting King€™s novel for the small screen. Although it earned a few decent reviews, The Shining TV show hardly has the classic status of the film. And that€™s the problem. The Shining is such a classic film that remaking it would be an impossible endeavour. Whoever directed it wouldn€™t be as good as Kubrick. No casting could match Nicholson. No scares could top the original. Even a shot for shot remake €“ a la Psycho €“ would be pointless. All that would do is serve to remind us of the original Shining film, an enduring fright fest needs no retelling.
