Another of the most divisive films of the year: Man of Steel was, hands down, the most controversial and loudly debated film of 2013. I won't attempt to defend the film or try to sway the opinion of those who vehemently dislike it - that's for another article - instead, let's turn our attention to one of the most overlooked sequences in the film - Clark's first flight. Beautifully shot by Zack Snyder, with a hopeful and uplifting voice-over from Russell Crowe's Jor-El, the scene in which Superman first takes flight is fantastic. We finally get to see him in the iconic suit, his cape blowing majestically in the wind, and as he soaks in the Sun's energy, he leans down and focuses all of his power into his launch. Zimmer's booming score makes it all the more exciting, and as we see Clark fly around the world, it's Henry Cavill's smile that sells it. Clark isn't just flying, he's not just becoming a superhero. He's having fun. He's laughing, scaring wildlife, and testing his limits; finally letting go of the baggage he's been carrying with him his entire life and embracing his power and potential. Say what you want about the film, but there's no denying the immense sense of wonder and excitement present in the shots of Superman, hands extended in front of him, defying gravity at breakneck speeds.
