The Counsellor was, in my eyes, one of the most underrated films of 2013, though I can see why it's not for everyone. There's a scene fairly early on in which Brad Pitt's character, Westray, explains to the titular counsellor (Michael Fassbender) what a bolito is, a hook-like device that is wrapped around a victim's neck, at which point a motor is activated, constricting a metal coil to the point that it either decapitates the victim or rips their jugular vein in half, or both. Screenwriting 101 says that this is going to mean something later, and sure enough, when Westray is out and about in London near the end of the film, he has the bolito wrapped around his neck by a passing jogger at the behest of the film's femme fatale, Malkina (Cameron Diaz). We then watch as Westray is helpless as the cord tightens around his neck, eventually causing his neck to explode with a torrent of blood, and even chopping off the fingers he used to try and rip the bolito from his neck. Gnarly.
