The Lasser Glass mirror originally belonged to Phillip and Virginia Lasser in 1754, before Philip met an untimely end burnt at his fireplace. In 1864, it was bought by Robert Clancy, who soon after lost an extreme amount of weight and died. The trail of death continued with Mary O'Connor in 1904, who brought the mirror home to hang in her bathroom and was found dead in her bathtub. Alice Carden then killed both of her children after hanging the mirror in their nursery in 1943.

Oculus details several more of these events over history before the cursed mirror fell into the hands of the Russell family - who are the central focus of the film - in 2002. The Russells have a bad time after the mirror comes into their lives and causes them to have supernatural disturbing hallucinations, such as their houseplants dying and the family dog going missing.

Mother Marie suffers a nervous breakdown and is shot dead by husband Alan, who then also tries to kill his children before his son Tim shoots him in self-defence, ending up in a mental hospital as a result. Heartbreakingly, as an adult, the mirror later tricks Tim into killing his sister in his attempt to destroy it, again with no one believing his story.

The origin of the paranormal mirror is never explained, but there is an alternative theory that it is just a normal mirror and the events are due to the Russell family having psychological problems.
