10 Scariest Horror Movie Scenes From The '80s

1. The Twins In The Hallway - The Shining

Evil Dead
Warner Bros.

Stanley Kubrick's cinematic masterpiece The Shining needs no introduction. The story of Jack Torrance going mad while working as a caretaker for the Overlook Hotel is recognizable to those who have not even seen the movie or read Stephen King's original novel.

The Shining is widely regarded as one of the scariest movies ever made, and for good reason. Every moment is oozing with tension and fear, despite being mostly set during the day.

One such moment is when Danny encounters the twins during his tricycle ride around the hotel. A key reason as to why this encounter works so well is because it is built-up throughout the movie.

The camera tracks Danny riding through the hotel multiple times before he comes across the Grady twins. By doing this, Kubrick lures the audience into a false sense of security, one that is broken when Danny comes face-to-face with the ghosts. This shocks the audience as the pattern they are used to is disrupted, leaving them with no idea of what to expect next.

Alongside this is the disturbing imagery of the twins having been brutally murdered by their father, and the haunting "come play with us Danny", both of which are petrifying just to think about.

Good luck sleeping after this one.
