10 Scariest Horror Movies Set During World War II

9. Ghosts Of War

In the most recently released entry on the list, a group of American soldiers are tasked with defending a French manor until relief arrives. However, as strange supernatural occurrences start to plague this small squad, they realise they're in way over their head. Can they discover the true purpose of the house, or are they doomed to remain there for all eternity?

Ghosts of War has plenty of delightfully occult spookiness for most of its runtime. The ghostly happenings around the manor are pretty terrifying as they indifferently harass both the Allied and Axis forces who enter the mansion, from surprise drownings to painful hangings. The film also cleverly hides a sinister mystery into the nature of the soldier's mission; the ghosts might not be the only thing playing tricks on their minds.

It's a shame that the mystery's reveal undermines everything the film had going for it. It is needlessly confusing, clumsily executed, and a travesty to what was a pretty solid ghost flick.

Still, at least we got some pretty neat scares before Ghosts of War did a complete 180 into madness.
