10 Scariest Horror Movies Set During World War II
4. Overlord
It seems like defeating shapeshifting demons wasn't the only unearthly series of events happening on D-Day.
A group of soldiers must take down a radio-jamming church tower to assist troops landing in Normandy. Entering the village nearby, the Allied soldiers realise Nazis have been experimenting on townspeople to create a secret weapon to win the war.
Overlord's body horror and war tragedies go hand in hand. One minute, characters are breezily chatting about home, and the next, they're vaporised by a landmine, or worse, brought back to life by an unnatural Nazi serum. The film's depictions of war crimes and Nazi experimentation are horrifying, which only makes us root for our admirably fleshed-out protagonists more.
Overlord doesn't need to sacrifice the action to create a bone-chilling threat. Game of Thrones' Pilou Asbæk is the ideal casting choice for the sadistic Captain Wafner, with Jovan Adepo acting as the perfect foil as the fresh-off-the-boat Private Boyce.
Unapologetically grotesque, Overlord will make you jump and wince at its painful-to-watch scares.
