As anyone who's spent five minutes in an Art Appreciation class can't wait to tell you, no painting is really just a painting.

Behind the canvas of every piece is a story, a lifetime of ideas, a message...

And sometimes, in horror movies at least, a mirror that's part of a shadowy government scheme to sacrifice you and your mates.

Created way back in 2009 but shelved until 2012, Cabin in the Woods is a twisty meta-horror comedy which takes the genre's tropes and turns them on their head to provide a satirical commentary on both the state of the genre and its audience. And if all that sounds boring, all you need to know is it's a funny, scary story of Thor and a loveable stoner trying to outwit the West Wing's Bradley Whitford and an army of monsters.

This film's scary painting is a gory depiction of an old-fashioned hunt which is on display in one of the remote cabin's rooms. A bloody, gruesome spectacle, the painting prompts the room's resident Jesse Williams to try covering it up, which is when things get even scarier.

Its contents may be disturbing, but what it’s covering up is a lot creepier: A one-way mirror which allows the room's inhabitant to look into the next room unbeknownst to its residents.
