10 Scariest Movies Made By Disney
3. Return To Oz (1985)
A forgotten sequel of MGM’s classic The Wizard of Oz, Disney
released a follow up movie called Return to Oz. It received many mixed reviews
as there was a decline in cinematography, storytelling and characters. Furthermore,
fans were not happy with the jarring shift in tone where the world of Oz was
depicted as bleaker, duller and darker.
The story goes as Dorothy is sent to a mental asylum because of the stories she tells of the 'fictional' Oz. Just before she is about to receive treatment for electrotherapy, she escapes from the institution and wakes up back in the land of Oz. However, the magical world she once knew is not what she remembers.
Return to Oz deserves merit for being creative but it’s practically the opposite of the original 1939 movie for all of its weirdness and nightmarish set pieces. There’s CGI rocks which can speak, a talking chicken as Dorothy’s side kick, bizarre re-imaginations of the original characters, scary mechanical men who are called ‘Wheelers’, a princess who collects heads and a strange pumpkinhead.
It’s no wonder people didn’t like Return to Oz – it lost all
the charm of the original and just came across as a peculiar, unnecessary sequel.
