For UFOlogists, the name Whitley Streiber will ring a bell, if not set off an alarm. Streiber was a horror novelist who had met with some success. His novel Wolfen was praised, as was its unsuccessful film adaptation with Albert Finney, as an uncommonly thought-provoking approach at the werewolf genre. But in 1985, Streiber claimed he was abducted by aliens in his cabin in upstate New York the day after Christmas.

One assumes that Streiber would devolve into crackpot territory from herein, but he took a measured response to his encounter. His nonfiction book, Communion, recounts his abduction by "The visitors" but doesn't leave out the possibility that he may suffer from hypnagogia, a fairly common neurological phenomenon in alleged abductees.

That didn't stop Hollywood from attempting the cash in on the best seller. Their adaptation of Communion was more successful than Wolfen, but still performed poorly. Strieber himself decries it as a work of fiction, bashing Walken's portrayal.

Nevertheless, the surprisingly lengthy, harrowing abduction sequence involving Walken, a rubber alien puppet and a strangely hard-to-obtain Eric Clapton score has earned a rightful cult following.
