9. Darth Sidious and Darth Plagueis Use Force Alchemy To Create Anakin

In The Phantom Menace, we are told that Anakin just, well...appeared. Shmi Skywalker said she carried him, gave birth to him, and raised him. After that, the topic is just dropped, Anakin slides further into the Dark Side, and eventually becomes Darth Vader.

Years later, someone at Lucasfilm realized that this was ridiculous and a more thorough story was created.

It came to pass that Anakin was actually the result of an arcane Sith art called Force Alchemy. In essence, Force Alchemy created life - twisted creatures, zombies ... and Chosen Ones.

Darth Sidious, who became the Emperor, and his master, Darth Plagueis, decided that they needed to guarantee that the Dark Side would continue to flourish. With that in mind, they used Force Alchemy to attempt to create life anywhere they could in the universe. Their result was Anakin Skywalker.

There was no choice for either mother or son in the matter; they were simply vessels to contain what amounted to a biology experiment for the two Sith lords.

What this retcon really meant was that Anakin was doomed from the start of his life to be a custom-designed Chosen One, a puppet to be controlled. He played that role until his final redemption just before his death.
