10 Sci-Fi Movie Deaths That No One Saw Coming
3. Jurassic World—Zara
Directed by Safety Not Guaranteed
director Colin Trevorrow, 2015’s Jurassic World was a fun, kinetic reboot of
the blockbuster franchise which took that earlier indie effort’s edgy
sensibility and married it with the huge scale action set pieces fans expected.
The film was filled with clever subversions of audience expectations and moments which didn’t go quite as the viewer assumed, but there was one spectacular and gruesome death that felt utterly unexpected…
Perhaps a little too much so.
Played by Slasher star Katie McGrath, Zara was a minor character in the film, an assistant-turned-irresponsible-nanny who essentially existed as a plot device to get the two young stars lost and unsupervised in short order. As such, she was probably never going to survive this reboot’s runtime. But good God, did anyone see her slow, drawn out demise coming?
As gory as the film’s rating allows for, the scene sees Zara plucked from the ground by a pterodactyl, tossed between two of them in mid-air, dropped into a tank and almost drowning, before finally being yanked out again—and eaten alive by a gigantic aquatic dinosaur.
What did Zara do to deserve this?
