10 Sci-Fi Movie Endings That Get Worse The More You Think About Them
3. Real Life Ain't Worth It -- The Matrix Revolutions (2003)
Once upon a time, The Matrix was a trilogy, and that trilogy ended with the battle for Zion, the last human city on Earth, and the place where those rescued from the Matrix programme live.
The Matrix Revolutions sees a war waged on two fronts: While humanity mount their defence against the machines in Zion, their "chosen one" Neo (Keanu Reeves) makes his way to the Machine City, where he must enter the Matrix one last time and defeat the rogue programme Agent Smith. The film ends with the machines and humans achieving a truce, ushering in the end of the war and a promise that those minds inside the Matrix who want to be freed will be.
But while the war may be over, Zion has been decimated; most of its citizens are dead; and the world that those outside of the Matrix fought for, as well as the world that those still to be released from the programme are being "freed" into is barren, dark and cold. Their few reasons to live have been greatly reduced, and what remains is years of work for the survivors to rebuild some kind of home from the rubble.
