Let's get the obvious out of the way early - X-Men Origins: Wolverine is not a great film.

Insert obligatory reference to muted Deadpool here.

However, its opening sequence does unlock a lot of secrets about our favourite claw-wielding mutant. When we first meet Wolverine, he's a small boy living in 19th Century Canada. His mutation is triggered by the murder of his father, producing his claws for the very first time to stab the man who killed his pops.

He then spends the next 100+ years on the run, fighting as a soldier in various wars alongside his half-brother Sabretooth.

You know, the same Sabretooth that Wolverine interacted with loads in the first X-Men film and didn't seem to recognise at all.

Not only do we find out a bit more about Logan's life before the X-Men, we also discover that he has been harbouring familial guilt. Whilst fighting in Vietnam, Sabretooth becomes increasingly violent, nearly murdering a civilian. Wolverine has to stop him, which drives a wedge between them.

Much like Peter Quill, this opening explains so much about Wolverine's attitude in later films, as we try to come to terms with the decades of horror he had endured.
