10 Sci-Fi Movie Rip-Offs You Won't Believe Exist
6. Battletruck
The success of Mad Max and especially its 1981 sequel spawned a glut of me-too post-apocalyptic sci-fi action films in a similar vein, such as 1982's Battletruck - or, if you live in the U.S., Warlords of the 21st Century.
Armed with a $3 million price tag - which, shockingly, isn't far off Mad Max 2's own production budget - this New Zealand-produced rip-off is actually fun to a point, if you can forgive the glaring similarities to George Miller's iconic franchise.
Set in the aftermath of the Oil Wars, Battletruck sees former soldier Hunter (Michael Beck) using his hi-tech motorcycle to do battle with the tyrannical Colonel Jacob Straker (James Wainwright), who terrorises the land in a massive armoured truck.
Though neither the story nor the performances rouse much interest, the sweeping cinematography courtesy of future two-time Oscar winner Chris Menges (The Killing Fields, The Mission) is quite terrific at times, as are the plentiful explosions and gnarly stunts.
As unapologetic cash-ins go, this one at least has a solid level of effort put into its production.
