10 Sci-Fi Movie Villains Who Actually Won
1. Jobe Smith - The Lawnmower Man
The Lawnmower Man may not be a great or even particularly good movie, but it at least gets some begrudging points for its off-the-wall ambition.
The cyberthriller revolves around Jobe Smith (Jeff Fahey), a mentally handicapped gardener who partakes in an experiment performed by Dr. Lawrence Angelo (Pierce Brosnan) to enhance his cognitive function.
The experiment is a wild success, but in addition to increasing his intelligence it also grants Jobe abilities such as psychokinesis and telepathy.
Jobe soon enough develops murderous tendencies while stating his ultimate goal, to exist within the computer mainframe of Angelo's place of employment, Virtual Space Industries.
Jobe states that upon doing so, and connecting to every computer in the world, he will cause every phone around the globe to ring at the same time.
Well, at film's end, Jobe does indeed enter the mainframe, and just before the VSI building is blown up, he manages to escape through a maintenance line.
In the very final scene, we then hear phones all around the world start ringing, indicating the Jobe did indeed successfully transcend his physical form and become a being of "pure energy."
This was admittedly retconned by the terrible 1996 sequel, Lawnmower Man 2: Beyond Cyberspace, but the less said about that the better.
