Yes, M Night Shyamalan’s 2002 alien invasion sci-fi horror has been reconsidered by critics over the last decade or so, and many have admitted that their initial distaste for the film was unfair in retrospect. For what it’s worth we too think the film is a pretty superb flick, melding masterful atmospheric scares with some stellar central performances and a moving story of a family finding their faith again after a terrible grievance.

But that said—the alien’s weakness is water!

They’re attacking a planet whose surface is 70% water—hell, they’re attacking a species who are 70% water!

And yes, we’ve all heard the old “Gibson’s character is a priest who’s lost his faith, they’re not really aliens but rather demons disguised as aliens, that’s why his belief in Joaquin Phoenix’s character stops them and also that glass of water was holy” chestnut. But the thing is, the aliens were invading all over the world, as proven by the film’s most infamous jump scare. So… did these supposed demons need to go as far as Rio de Janeiro to test one American priest’s faith?
