10 Sci-Fi Movies That Almost Had Way Better Endings
3. A Quiet Place
2018 saw former Office star and current action hero
John Krasinski shock the world by proving himself a formidable talent at
horror, with the actor writing and directing the absurdly tense post-apocalyptic
sci-fi/horror hybrid A Quiet Place. The flick made incredible use of its
premise, using minimal dialogue and masterful sound design to paper over some
derivative monster designs and a paper-thin plot.
The story of the film features a handful of twists, such as a poorly timed pregnancy, but it’s largely kept as bare bones as possible in order to up the tension of the film. Almost no backstory is revealed and virtually no extraneous characters appear onscreen, leaving the atmosphere intense and foreboding throughout the runtime.
The film almost had an ending as brutally harsh as its opening scenes, wherein Krasinski’s heroic sacrifice may save his children but they are nonetheless unable to kill any of the flick’s many monsters and remain living in fear of their return.
However, Krasinski opted for a more conventional
ending wherein the application of a hearing aid leads the family matriarch to
discover how the monsters can be defeated, providing a multiplex-friendly happy
ending but depriving real horror heads of the overwhelming tension which had
pervaded the preceding film.
