10 Sci-Fi Movies That Break The Genre

8. Arrival

Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind
Paramount Pictures

Science fiction has many several staples that exist within the genre that have been done to death, aliens is perhaps top of that list. It is incredibly difficult to find a unique view or narrative concerning aliens with so much saturation in the market, Arrival is certainly one of the few films in recent memory that managed to buck that trend completely.

Arrival looks at the idea of communication, and poses the question of how would we be able to talk to any potential extraterrestrial visitors we may one day have. The film is an undoubted slow-burner, there is no typical sci-fi set pieces or grand scale action but it is incredibly well-written and constructed. It is also anchored by some brilliant performances from Amy Adams and Jeremy Renner.

The slow pace perhaps stopped Arrival getting the wide praise that it deserved but it is a film that deserves another look from those who immediately dismissed it, because it really is one of the smartest takes on a well-mined concept in many years. It is clever, beautiful and brilliantly original and stands out as a fantastic piece of unique sci-fi fare that deserves more appreciation.
