There is huge temptation to believe the suggestion that the long-awaited Blade Runner sequel was a bit of a supermodel cliche - beautiful but a little bit vapid. It sounds like harsh criticism, but for anyone not invested in this universe or looking for something slightly less meditative, Denis Villeneuve's stunning visuals and occasionally ponderous pace do suggest that it's style over substance.

But like the original, which has inspired some of the most enthusiastic discourse in sci-fi movie history, the film's still waters run deep. This is not just the story of an android hunting both other, outdated models and his own place in the world, it's also a meditation on existence itself. 2049 is the story of Ryan Gosling's K questioning what it fundamentally means to be human, but there's also a reflection on perception and reality, a challenge to religious institutions and even more grandly, the very meaning of life.

It's SO much more than just wondering whether Deckard is an android or not and it's a film that may take persistence and patience - for some - to get to that level of appreciation.
