10 Sci-Fi Movies That Got The Science Right

9. Gattaca (1997)

DEEP IMPACT DISASTER
Columbia Pictures

Gattaca is set at an indeterminate time in the future, where genetic manipulation has become the norm. People born naturally are labeled as In-Valid and are made to be the dregs of society — incapable of landing a meaningful position or climbing the social ladder, as everyone else is genetically superior.

One line in the movie perfectly summarizes society: "We now have discrimination down to a science." While humanity hasn't progressed to the point of genetic discrimination and prejudice, it's now possible, since two children were reportedly genetically modified by a Chinese scientist.

Other technologies seen in the film, including the lengthening of the legs to make someone taller, are possible. Gattaca's society is constantly monitoring people for their genetic superiority via numerous biometric ID systems. While these were shown to be far more efficient than what exists today, the technology to scan unique irises and other aspects of human physiology are in existence today.

Some elements in the film are a bit far fetched from reality, including the ease and simplicity of rocket travel and the travel between planets and moons within the Solar System. While humanity may perfect such actions in the future, this was far more sci-fi than the genetic issues raised in the film.
