There are few more memorable instances of the villain winning in cinema than in the chilling conclusion to 1978's superb remake of Invasion of the Body Snatchers.

While the original 1956 film ended on a more hopeful note that humanity was set to prevail over the Pods - an extraterrestrial force seeking to covertly assimilate humanity a person at a time - the remake wraps up with a shockingly bleak mic drop of an ending.

The film's chilling final scene focuses on two of the city's few remaining survivors, protagonist Matthew Bennell (Donald Sutherland) and his friend Nancy Bellicec (Nancy Cartwright), as they secretly meet up.

But a moment later, Matthew raises his finger to Nancy and opens his mouth wide, letting out an inhuman shriek, revealing himself to having been turned into a Pod also.

The clear implication is that Nancy too will be captured and replaced, and given that one of the film's final sights is a glimpse of the Pods preparing to move their operation to neighbouring West Coast cities, it's pretty clear that humanity is done.

Sticklers might argue that there's a creepy banality about the Pods' actions which transcends mere evil, but given their industrious attempts to wipe out humanity, it's tough to see them as anything but.
