Stanley Kubrick's bold adaptation of Anthony Burgess' novel dares to deviate from the source material with its decidedly more pessimistic ending.

In the novel, thug protagonist Alex DeLarge (Malcolm McDowell) ultimately renounces his former life of ultraviolence and rape after being "reformed" by the government's experimental Ludovico brainwashing technique.

But Kubrick opted to change Burgess' ending, cynically concluding his movie with Alex's sexual and violent urges returning, as he ironically declares, "I was cured, all right!"

Even beyond Alex lapsing back in to his prior state, it's clear that the dystopian government desperate to control behaviour by any means necessary has the population firmly in its vice grip. A bad time for all, then.
