10 Sequels That Stupidly Changed The Main Character

4. Alan Grant To Ian Malcolm - The Lost World: Jurassic Park

The Original: Jurassic Park had everything. On the one hand, you've got gigantic dinosaurs that'll rip your arms off, while on the other you've got a set of characters/potential victims you actually care about (this is where Jurassic World didn't quite hit it). At the centre is Alan Grant, and this curmudgeonly paleontologist works as the perfect guide through the theme park gone wrong.

The Sequel: Ian Malcolm is everyone's favourite character from the original because, well, it's Jeff Goldblum and you don't need any more explanation, but that doesn't necessarily mean he should be leading a full movie. To do that you'd need to introduce love interests and family and wider ambitions and he'd wind up a far cry from the man everyone fell in love with.

And guess what they did? To be fair, the focusing on Malcolm wasn't The Lost World's biggest issue (that'd be the complete lack of focus on what the hell the plot is), but it does precipitate the problems and, when you get down to it, really only happened because Goldblum was the actor most interested in returning.

Then again, it's not like Alan Grant coming back worked wonders for the series either (unless talking dream raptors are your thing).
