Written by Alex Garland, the novelist turned screenwriter responsible for films such as 28 Days Later and Ex Machina, Dredd was yet another attempt to make the character relevant for a modern audience; after the campy failure that was 1995's Judge Dredd, which felt like it was directed by somebody who had never read the original comic series, Garland's own script was dark, tight and very violent.

The resulting film stands as something of an unsung triumph; whilst Karl Urban was lauded for his turn as the titular law enforcement officer and critics praised the film for its bloody simplicity, nobody bothered to go and see it. It grossed a depressing $41.5 million on a budget of $45 million, which meant that Garland's plan to pen two further sequels were instantly compromised.

Fans of the movie have spent the three years following Dredd's release rallying for said sequels to be made, but Garland has insisted they'll never happen due to the first flick's low box office takings.

Interestingly, there have been recent discussions regarding a Netflix TV series, but nothing has been confirmed as of yet.
