9. Mr. Brooks 2
Mr. Brooks is a 2007 psychological thriller starring Kevin Costner as Earl Brooks, who is a successful businessman and family man living in Portland, OR. who is also a highly prolific serial killer known as The Thumbprint Killer. The film undoubtedly owes much of its plot points to Showtime's Dexter, but was nonetheless a fresh take on the concept and filled with great performances. It wasn't an overall success, thanks to mixed reviews from critics and a modest box office take of $48 million (from a budget of $20 million). It was originally supposed to launch a start of a trilogy of films, but those plans were put on hold indefinitely after its release. Mr. Brooks marked one of Kevin Costner's most interesting and unique rolls in a long time, and though this film can easily be enjoyed on its own and very much tells a solo story, it's easy to see how a sequel could expand on the narrative explored here and dive even deeper into the psyche of Mr. Brooks and how his inherent darkness affects his family.
