10 Serious Actors Who Successfully Made The Jump To Comedy

8. Meryl Streep

Death To Smoochy Edward Norton

Widely regarded as the greatest actress of her generation, Meryl Streep is also the most nominated actor in the history of the Academy Awards by a heavy margin. The woman is a bona fide tour de force of drama.

After nabbing her first nomination for The Deer Hunter and her first win for Kramer Vs. Kramer, Streep continued to dominate the dramatic landscape for the next two decades. Name any memorable drama from the 80s or 90s, and there's a strong chance that Meryl showed up to boost its credentials.

Streep's transition into the comedy world was rocky, to say the least. Her first straight out attempt at the genre came in the form of She-Devil, an extremely misguided black comedy also starring Roseanne Barr. As bad as the film was overall, however, Streep still nabbed another Oscar nomination for her performance.

Since then, she's been able to weave in and out of genres with the best of them, coupling hilarious turns in Death Becomes Her, The Devil Wears Prada, and Julie & Julia with deathly serious roles in The Hours, Doubt, and The Iron Lady.

Her greatest achievement in comedy might actually be her self portrayal in the Farrelly brothers' highly underrated Stuck On You, which is absolutely sublime.
