10 Seriously Bleak Movie Endings (That Are Oddly Inspiring)

9. Donnie Darko

Donnie Darko (2001) Another cult favorite, Donnie Darko has rise from obscurity since its release and become one of the most popular films from its decade. Donnie Darko has a crazy complicated plot that begins with Donnie surviving a freak accident involving a jet engine and subsequently sees him be plagued by disturbing visions about the end of the world and committing crimes he might not have been able to control. Donnie ends up losing his love interest and becoming a murderer because of his visions, before discovering that he is stuck in a sort of time loop. Donnie decides to close the loop by allowing himself to be killed by the engine the next time around, ensuring the well-being of his family and friends. While that might not be the best summary of the plot, Donnie Darko ends with the death of the main character, which is really all you need to be a bleak film, but director Richard Kelly imbues the film with a sense of dread and foreboding that makes Donnie Darko particularly memorable. Of course, since Donnie allows himself to die to protect his friends and family, ultimately the film is a bit inspiring as Donnie places the welfare of others above his own life.

I love movies, literature, history, music and the NBA. I love all things nerdy including but not limited to Star Wars, Star Trek, Lord of the Rings, and Firefly. My artistic idols are Dylan, Dostoevsky, and Malick and my goal in life is to become like Bernard Black from Black Books. When I die, I hope to turn into the space baby from 2001: A Space Odyssey.
