Gandahar is the only animated film to make it onto this list, and for very good reason — it's really weird, but somehow, that doesn't make it any less amazing. The film is based on the Jean-Pierre Andrevon novel Les Hommes-machines contre Gandahar (The Machine-Men versus Gandahar) and was produced and originally voiced in French.

It's possible you saw the film under its English title, The Light Years. That version was edited heavily and worked on by Isaac Asimov. While it's done very well, the original French version is the superior choice of the two, as it retains all of director René Laloux's original vision.

Gandahar is an amalgam of science-fiction and fantasy, and the story begins with the peaceful people of Gandahar suddenly finding themselves under attack by an army of robots known as the Men of Metal. The people of Gandahar were turned to stone and taken by the Men of Metal, so the Council of Women task Sylvain to investigate.

He finds that the Men of Metal were sent from the future by a giant brain called Metamorphis, who explains that he is innocent now, but in a thousand years, he will become the evil entity waging war across Gandahar. Sylvain agrees to go into stasis for 1,000 years, and when he emerges, things get even weirder.
