10 On-Set Injuries You Won’t Believe Actors Worked Through

2. Jim Caviezel - Struck By Lightning - Passion Of The Christ

We suppose it's only natural that the actor playing the Lord Jesus Christ himself would suffer more than his fair share of trials and tribulations. After all, nothing says the Bible like unending torment. Mel Gibson's interpretation of the Passion was to be dark, gritty, and true to the "real" story (or at least as close to the truth as you can possibly get when using reference material comprised of several different secondary sources writing over a period of 1500 years and all with their own agendas). But we don't think anyone, least of all Jim Caviezel, was prepared for how hardcore the shoot was going to be. Exhibit A: Jim Caviezel was struck by lightning twice during this film shoot. Once while filming the Sermon on the Mount, and once while actually on the cross. He's actually pretty lucky he lives in a secular society, because a few centuries ago people would have seen that as some kind of sign. He was also accidentally whipped twice, leaving a 14-inch scar on his back, dislocated his shoulder when the 150 lb cross fell on him, and suffered hypothermia and pneumonia filming in winter. Just as Jesus died for our sins, Jim Caviezel put himself through hell to bring us Mel Gibson's blockbuster epic, which stirred all of your uncomfortably religious neighbors and relatives into a spiritual tizzy not seen since the days of Pat Robertson and Tammy Faye Bakker.
