Staying with the depraved minds of the foreign horror directors, Andrzej Żuawski's Possession is one of the least traditional horror films on this list in fact most wouldn't classify it as a horror film at all. It's certainly horrifying though, make no mistake. Isabelle Adjani and Sam Neill (yes, Alan Grant from Jurassic Park) star as a married couple whose relationship takes a significant nose dive, with Adjani's Anna demanding a divorce when her husband - who it's intimated is a spy, although the nature of his work is never really explained - returns from business. She doesn't explain why, but she shows increasingly worrying signs of mental distress and bizarre behaviour, suggesting something supernatural might be going on......or maybe not. Żuawski doesn't make easy films, and Possession is no exception. It's never clear if that title is supposed to be a tip off as to what's happening to Anna over the course of the movie, or if the "spirit" that's taken control of her is more metaphorical. Nonetheless there's plenty of scary imagery, violent scenes and creature effects to tingle the spine, with the overall effect being somewhere between a horror movie and Lars Von Trier's Anti-Christ.
