10 Shocking Movie Character Deaths That Came Out Of Nowhere

7. Benigna - The Orphanage

Look, it’s not like 2007’s The Orphanage was a movie wanting for scares before the scene featuring this particular shocking demise rolled around. Directed by future A Monster Calls director J.A Bayona (also responsible for, er, Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom), this spooky, atmospheric supernatural chiller follows Laura as she’s besieged by ghosts whilst trying to do something nice—that’ll teach her.

A kindly mother, Laura returns to the eponymous orphanage of her childhood in hopes of converting the creepy cavernous place into a home for disabled kids, but her ambitions are thwarted when her son goes missing. There’s also a little marital drama and a discomfiting encounter with Benigna, an elderly woman who claims she was as a social worker in the old orphanage, but mostly it’s a slow-burn mystery as Laura attempts to investigate her son’s disappearance.

You know, until Benigna is smashed by a bus whilst running errands, with Laura’s husband arriving on the scene just in time to see the old dear’s jaw dropping off her face as the awestruck audience attempts not to follow suit.

After that point we’re all pretty sure we’re in horror movie territory.
