9. Mark Ruffalo - Collateral
Michael Mann pulled the rug out from underneath us extremely well in his masterful film noir Collateral, in which Mark Ruffalo's Detective Fanning spends his time chasing down Vincent (Tom Cruise), a skilled assassin who is leaving a trail of dead all over town. Fanning's fateful moment comes when he tracks Vincent down to a club, and after a shootout begins between Vincent and some gangsters, Fanning gives chase, following the hitman outside. However, Vincent doesn't hesitate, gunning him down in front of his hostage cabbie Max (Jamie Foxx), who expresses disgust that he could so easily kill a man just doing his job who might have kids. For viewers, the shock is simply in how brazenly Mann upens convention; in 99% of films, Fanning would be the man to gun Vincent down at the end, but here, our main hope is killed mid-way through the picture, leaving it all up to Max.
