1. Car Crashes - Crash
And yet, there's one fetish above all others that I just struggle to identify with, as have millions of others who watched David Cronenberg's controversial and divisive Crash. The adaptation of J.G. Ballard's novel revolves around characters who are sexually aroused at the sight of car accidents, to the extent that James Spader and Holly Hunter's characters largely only get aroused by rutting inside of cars. Without question the most discussed scene involves Spader's character having sex with a wound on the inside of Hunter's thigh. However, the ending is perhaps the most telling and probing examination of the film's fetish, as Spader and his wife (Deborah Kara Unger) seem to find their marriage revitalised after experiencing a car crash. Spader's character's final phrase is, "Maybe next time", which many have interpreted to suggest that the fetish is simply a desire to achieve death, which is referred to as a means of "fertilisation" by Elias Koteas earlier on in the film. Though we might not agree with or understand the fetish by film's end, there's no denying the beguiling, indeed,
