9. Orgies - Eyes Wide Shut
It's amusing in retrospect to think that Stanley Kubrick's final film, Eyes Wide Shut, was considerably hyped both during production and ahead of release, as many expected it to be a sexy examination of Nicole Kidman and Tom Cruise's relationship. These people clearly forgot that Kubrick directed the film, given his reputation for directing chilly, disconnected movies that rarely grasp the human element of their subject matter (for better and for worse). Eyes Wide Shut is nevertheless a masterpiece, just not in the way that many expected. The most famous scene comes when Tom Cruise is lured into a gigantic New York mansion, where noble folks hold lavish orgies, where everyone wears masquerade masks. Nobody said it was sexy, but it is a) freaking weird, and therefore b) damn kinky. Anytime someone makes a joke or reference to an orgy, there's most likely a nod to Eyes Wide Shut not too far off.
