10 Simple Fixes That Would Have Made Star Wars: The Force Awakens Perfect

I have very little bad to say about the movie’s finale - the convergence of characters in Starkiller fits, Han’s death is well handled, the space fight thrilling and the lightsaber duel at the end is perfect, a scrappy mesh of the kineticism of the prequels and the emotional weight of the originals. The one thing that does irk me about all this is the manner with which Rey gets the upper-hand - using the Force only after Kylo Ren reminds her.

I think Rey’s character works fine within how she’s set up - no Mary Sue whining here - and for her to beat a mopey manchild who views Hayden Christensen the peak of menace isn’t as much a stretch as some would have you believe, but this moment doesn’t lock with the character and if anything makes her too dumb.

To fix it, simply have her gain the upper hand without pointing it out; audiences will be able to get it's the Force. Or (and this is a massive canon switch that could go against where the series is going), how about her hearing Luke in her head? Chills!
