For the longest time, Hollywood struggled to portray anything involving computers realistically. Early computer movies like WarGames and Hackers made the internet resemble a virtual world, rather than lines of complex coding. Until recently, hacking was often depicted like literal magic.

But since laptops, iPads, and mobile phones are part and parcel in today's world, actors should have little trouble using technology like this.

And yet, it often looks weird when performers text or type on a keyboard. It's easy to tell when an actor is "ghost typing," since they don't use the spacebar, making it impossible for them to write structured sentences. Not only that, the typer's movements sometimes don't correlate with what's happening on-screen, which can prove distracting.

Of course, cinema is always evolving, so films and TV shows are finding new ways to solve this problem. Sherlock, House of Cards, and The Social Network utilise all sorts of tricks to make typing and texting seem more dynamic and authentic.
