8. Sally Hardesty - The Texas Chainsaw Massacre

As gutsy and resourceful as The Texas Chain Saw Massacre's heroine Sally Hardesty (Marilyn Burns) is, her luck nevertheless seemed to run out at film's end when attempting to flee her cannibalistic captors.

Sally manages to escape from the Sawyer family's clutches and make a run for the road outside their homestead, albeit with the Sawyer brothers giving chase.

The hitchhiker (Edwin Neal) is quickly able to catch up to a wounded and exhausted Sally, and starts slashing away at her with a knife in the middle of the road.

But before the hitchhiker can finish the job, an 18-wheeler plows through the middle of the road and positively creams him, inadvertently saving her life.

Sally then has to contend with the chainsaw-wielding Leatherface (Gunnar Hansen), but is aided by the trucker (Ed Guinn), who throws a wrench at Leatherface before he can strike at Sally, causing him to fall over and slice his own leg.

And in her third and final close call inside of a hot minute, she leaps into the bed of a passing truck moments before Leatherface can grab her, finally getting to safety once and for all.
