If you're searching for a fun, campy (pun intended) horror film to ease into the slasher genre, there are certainly worse places to start than with Robert Hiltziks Sleepaway Camp. The '80s were an exciting time for slashers, with dozens churned out every year trying to cash in off the success of similar box office hits. Among a sea of uninspired flicks around this time, Sleepaway Camp actually proved itself as something much more memorable. Sleepaway Camp gets a lot of its praise for its shocking twist, which is one of the most audacious endings in the history of horror. Up until this ludicrous ending, the film is fairly run-of-the-mill slasher about the killings of young teen campers at a Summer camp. The acting is subpar and the writing is only so-so, but that sort of weirdly adds to its charm. Sure, by todays standards most of the films kills seem quite tame, but it still packs enough gore and campy goodness to warrant a watch and is certainly worth watching for the ending alone. Its the sort of horror flick that defines the term cult film.
