10 Small Details You Only Notice Rewatching The Nun

8. The Jo Stafford Song

Father Burke and Sister Irene arrive at Saint Cartha's monastery and are welcomed by the Abbess of the building who offers the pair the opportunity to stay the night.

Naturally the Abbess is later revealed to be Valak in disguise and this invitation just turns out to be a ploy to lure the pair away from eachother and begin harassing them. During the night, Father Burke is woken up by the demon turning on the nearby radio up at the highest volume, and its choice of song does make for a fun, if subtle, moment.

The song playing on the radio is Jo Stafford's 1952 hit 'You Belong To Me'. As the name suggests, the song tells the story of a couple of separated lovers. The exact lyrics that play when Valak begins playing the song on the radio are particularly ironic: "Remember darling, 'til you're home again/That you belong to me...".

Given the whole film revolves around the demon's attempt to find and possess a new host so that it might escape the abbey, these lyrics make for a fitting choice of song for Valak.
