10 Smartest Decisions In Star Wars History

3. Luke's Final Sacrifice Saves The Resistance - The Last Jedi

Luke Skywalker's depiction in The Last Jedi is masterful, and also totally in keeping with his depiction in the Original Trilogy. The Luke of A New Hope, The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi constantly showed flashes of fear and anger, and when faced with the prospect of another Vader prior to The Force Awakens, he shows yet another moment of vulnerability that unleashes a horrific chain of events.

But Luke Skywalker isn't a beloved character because he's perfect - or at least he shouldn't be. He's clearly flawed, and yet he's also one of the finest Jedi to ever exist, and finds a way of not only honouring the way of the Jedi, but also the legend of Luke Skywalker in his final act.

With the Resistance pinned down on Crait and with nowhere to go, Luke arrives to save the day. But instead of facing down Kylo Ren and the rest of the First Order in a classic lightsaber duel, he finds another way of confronting them. Luke uses all his power to project a version of himself he knows will enrage Ben Solo the most, Vader's weapon drawn and his face de-aged to resemble his appearance from the night Ben left, in order to ensure his friends can live to fight another day.

Luke takes a different path and ends up committing pretty much the ultimate Jedi act, outplaying his opponent not with his skills with a lightsaber, but with his personal knowledge of Ben and his understanding of what a Jedi should be. It's heroic, beautiful and heartbreaking all at once, and just about the most noble sacrifice the saga has ever seen.

Content Producer/Presenter

WhatCulture's very own resident movie guy, Ewan has been working in the content creation biz for over 10 years now, having started as a freelance contributor to WhatCulture Gaming all the way back in 2015. After graduating with a First-Class Honours in History from Northumbria University in 2017 (where he won a prize for a totally killer dissertation on the Watergate years), Ewan took on the role of Comics Editor at WhatCulture and quickly developed WhatCulture Comics into one of the biggest superhero-focused channels on YouTube. He followed this with a brief hiatus at Screen Rant in 2021, where he worked across the Gaming and Film sections as a writer and editor, before returning to WhatCulture as a Senior Content Producer / Presenter in 2023. He started his own podcast, We Love Dad Movies, in 2022, and has contributed several written pieces to the Eisner-nominated comics website Shelfdust as well. In his current role, Ewan incorporates his love of cinema, comic books, and history into written pieces and video essays for WhatCulture's Film & TV channel, as well as WhatCulture Gaming and WhatCulture Horror, with a particular focus on nineties-era Dad Movies, old school Westerns, and Golden Age Hollywood Noir. John Carpenter is his fave, and he thinks Batman Beyond should never have been cancelled. If that's your vibe, you'll probably like his stuff.
