10 Songs That Became More Famous Than Their Movies
7. Against All Odds - Against All Odds
I Believe I Can Fly might be a big winner with the X Factor crowd, but there is one song that far exceeds even that in the wannabe star singer's repertoire. Phil Collins' 1984 hit Against All Odds is onto a winner with talent show contestants if only because it allows them to shout "take a look at me now" at all their doubters live on TV (of course it helps that there is an even more terrible cover version from X Factor contestant favourites Mariah Carey and Westlife). While the talent show circuit and multiple cover versions have given Collins' power ballad a life of its own down the years, it was originally written purely to reflect the themes of the film of the same title. Director Taylor Hackford had had a hit with An Officer And A Gentleman, in part thanks to Joe Cocker and Jennifer Warnes' theme song Up Where We Belong. Hackford simply wanted Collins to provide the same for his neo-noir follow up. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3i2A48n4PDo A remake of classic noir Out Of The Past, the film Against All Odds is perfectly passable on its own terms but utterly fails to live up to the quality of its inspiration and has, thus, slipped out of memory. The film's major cinematic legacy is that it served as the model for a CGI recreation of star Jeff Bridges for Tron: Legacy. The song, however, spent three weeks at the top of the US charts and only became more popular as the years went by.
